The week includes a fashion show, boat race, art battle and more
With 40 documentaries, the excitement is building at Morristown High School. “(This) week is our art design show. Opening night is Monday with a fashion show starting at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday night is the film festival,” said Morristown High School senior Zaji Zabalerio. “We confirmed all the entries (May 13). There were 40 documentaries. There will be fantastic prizes.” The 5th Annual Morristown High School Art & Design show will begin on Tuesday evening and run through Thursday. They beat Vernon 14-9
After being defeated on Tuesday against Montville on the road, Morristown girls lacrosse came strong into the state tournament on Thursday. Ranked No. 5, the Colonials beat No. 12 Vernon, 14-9. Coach Evan Mager said on Tuesday that the team needed to focus in this tournament because it only takes one bad day to get sent home. “We need to figure it out going into state because in playoffs, any team can play,” said Mager. “Everybody needs to realize that it’s one (bad) game and you go home. Luckily we have a day tomorrow to prepare. We’re ranked fifth in the conference so we have a home game, which is Thursday at 4:30 p.m.” Did you go and get pictures or video of the game? Colonials face Vernon on Thursday.
After being defeated on Tuesday against Montville on the road, Morristown girls lacrosse is looking ahead to the state tournament on Thursday. There was much excitement Monday night after the girls defeated Randolph for the first time, which continued their perfect season. However that ended the following day. After coming off of a high from defeating Randoph on Monday, Morristown girls lacrosse had a bit of a let down with a loss Tuesday on the road against Montville, ending their perfect season. The Mustangs defeated the Colonials 23-16. “Because of our win today, we got a piece of the conference title,” said Montville coach Jen Mulvaney. “They were the only undefeated team in the conference. We had one loss and Roxbury had one loss so us beating them today gave us a three-way tie for the conference title.” In this three-way tie, Morristown lost to Montville, Montville lost to Roxbury, and Roxbury lost to Morristown. Town, school and Morris Plains teen will meet to find a solution to two-hour parking rule resulting in tickets.
Parking in Morristown is a constant tug-a-war to balance the needs of residents, businesses and institutions. After hearing feedback from residents, the town set two-hour parking limits on the residential streets surrounding Morristown High School. However, because of the limited parking in the high school’s lot, students parking in these surrounding neighborhoods have accumulated quite a few tickets and fines. They beat Randolph 18-11
To continue their winning streak, the Colonials defeated Randolph 18-11 on Monday. They play on the road against Montville on Tuesday. “Girls lacrosse is playing against Montville Tuesday. If we win, we win our league for the first time ever,” said Grace Campbell. On Monday, “they beat Randolf for the first time and by a lot. It’s so exciting to see the team doing so well after all these years,” said Teresa Murpy, school board member. Coach Evan Mager said that the girls had not lost a single game among the seven teams that make up their southern conference.

MHS was in Newsweek’s annual list of the top 2,000 high schools in the nation
Morristown High School was named one of the country’s best high schools in the Newsweek and Daily Beast’s annual ‘America’s Best High Schools’ list, released Monday. The list ranked what it called the 2,000 best high schools across the country. Morristown High School was ranked No. 1272. According to an explanation in Newsweek, schools across the nation were ranked based on six criteria – graduation rate, college acceptance rate, advanced exams (AP, IB and AICE tests) taken per student, average SAT or ACT score, average advanced placement score, and percentage of students enrolled in at least one advanced placement class. Newsweek asked more than 5,000 high schools across the country to report their data from the 2010-11 school year. …

One senior is 1 of 20 picked as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and the other was chosen as a Presidential Scholar.
One Morristown High School senior has received many accolades for her nationally recognized achievements in science but this well-rounded student is also being recognized for her writing. Catherine Wong, is one of 20 students in the country to be selected as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts for her writing. Also selected as a Presidential Scholar is Thomas Hartke, who attends Delbarton School in Morristown. The full list of presidential scholars is attached to this Patch article. Robert (Brett) Harvey, a MHS senior, was also nominated as a Presidential Scholar. Like Wong he scored 2400 on his SATs, is a national merit finalist and merit scholarship recipient. Five notable Morristown natives were recognized on Friday as Morristown High School’s Heritage Club hosted its 17th annual Heritage Day celebration. “It’s a privilege to honor some of our past (graduates),” said Principal Ethel Minchello. “The students do the research about these people, they select them and then they honor them.” Here’s a look at those that were honored and presented with a plaque.
