JCP&L is taking steps to improve its ability to communicate with first responders during a large-scale emergency. The utility will install components of the New Jersey Preparedness Emergency Communication Network at its regional dispatching operations in Morristown and Red Bank, spokesman Ron Morano said Thursday. The facilities manage the daily work on the company's electrical system and provide coordination when repair crews are dispatched during widespread power outages. “Participating in this system will enhance our ability to share real-time critical information with our customers, communities and first responders during emergency situations,” JCP&L President Don Lynch said in a release. “Joining this system is one of the many things …

Politicians have to make tough—perhaps expensive—decisions and need to start taking action.
It’s been three weeks since Superstorm Sandy blew through New Jersey, and past time to begin figuring out how to minimize losses the next time. Some solutions involve building; some, doing the opposite. Just as the attacks of Sept. 11 brought talk of rebuilding, there have been vows to restore the shore back to Oct. 28, 2012, as if nothing had happened. That would be a huge and costly mistake. It is not politically correct to say that at least some of what was destroyed should not be rebuilt. But it’s the truth. Barrier islands are aptly named. They are supposed to serve as barriers for the shoreline. When a major storm like Sandy or Irene hits, they will take the brunt of it and provide some measure of protection for the mainland. They …

Full restoration was expected Sunday night—nearly two weeks after Tropical Storm Sandy—throughout Morris Township, Business Administrator Timothy Quinn said. According to JCP&L's outage map, all of Morris Plains was restored, while less than five customers remained in the dark in Morris Township and 35 were without power in Morristown as of Sunday night at about 9:30 p.m. Any customer without service is requested to call JCP&L outage number at 1-888-544-4877. Morris Township also asks you call 973-326-7360 so a municipal official will follow up with JCP&L. If your electric service was pulled from your home and damaged you will need to apply for an electrical permit and have it inspected, according to a statement released by Quinn. The …

An increase in manpower will help JCP&L restore most New Jersey outages by Saturday evening, according to a statement released Friday afternoon. An additional 1,200 line workers joined the nearly 7,000 workers already on the ground in New Jersey on Friday. After winter storm Athena caused JCP&L's power outage numbers to increase by more than 100,000 from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning, both the company and Gov. Chris Christie have said Sunday should bring the state's residents relief. JCP&L reported Friday at noon that 163,309 of its nearly 1.1 million customers were without power. However, that number dropped to 110,468 by Friday night at 10 p.m. Municipalities in Patch's coverage area in Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Passaic and …

'Everyone's overwhelmed,' said Jeffrey S. Paul, coordinator for the county Office of Emergency Management.
Tropical Storm Sandy knocked out power to about 87 percent of an electric company's customers in Morris County, the Morris County Office of Emergency Management coordinator said Tuesday. Along with the widespread power outages, a "tremendous amount of hazards" exist on roads throughout the county, and officials are encouraging the public to stay home so crews can address issues, including down trees, wires and utility poles, on main thoroughfares, said Jeffrey S. Paul, coordinator for the county OEM. "We did get hit pretty hard," Paul said. "Everyone's doing a great job. Certainly everyone's overwhelmed." Paul said Jersey Central Power & Light had about 170,000 customers in Morris County without power on Tuesday, including more than 20,000…

JCP&L has reported that 708 customers are without power around Morris Township as of about 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The power company's outage map shows the areas impacted by the outage. Harding Township and Monmouth are other areas affected by outages Sunday, according to the map. The outage maps were launched by JCP&L last Thursday, in an effort to allow customers to report service interruptions and to also show the outage totals in each county across the state. FirstEnergy Corp., which operates JCP&L, said in a statement that the maps include alerts with links to outage-related news, safety reminders and other information. The utility company also said that the maps are accessible via smart phones and other mobile devices. …

Internet site and email had been down for over a week.
We were beginning to worry about Delbarton. Just before Hurricane Irene hit, the headmaster had expressed his concerns about the campus and its many old, majestic trees. After the storm, we knew the campus had lost power along with many residents in the Route 24/Mendham Road area of Morris Township. As residents began getting their power back over Labor Day weekend, we decided to check in with our contact at Delbarton, Communications Director Jessica Fiddes. We sent an email. It bounced back. We called. No one answered. We checked the web site. It had disappeared. A drive past the campus on Monday told the tale. Multiple Verizon trucks were clustered near the entrance, working on the wires. About a hundred feet away, JCP&L crews were also …

Puppet-making activity continued despite loss of lights.
Give the Morris Museum staff credit for their adaptability. When Thursday's power outage interrupted a children's puppet-making activity, they simply moved a few tables into the daylight-filled lobby, served some snacks and let the fun continue. The outage was caused by a transformer fire along the traction line path in Morris Township and cut power to an undetermined number of JCP&L customers for approximately 49 minutes on Thursday.
