25 area high school seniors will receive $4,000 scholarships.
Continuing a long tradition, the 200 Club of Morris County will award scholarships to deserving children of Morris County police, fire and emergency medical services providers at the Annual Scholarship Dinner on May 20 at Zeris Inn in Mountain Lakes. Nayna Rani Shah, Morristown High School and Timothy Christian Worts, Morristown-Beard High School are two of the 25 high school seniors who will receive $4,000 scholarships, paid over four years of college. Scholarship criteria include academic performance, community service, extracurricular activities and family financial need. Morris Plains native will study in Turkey for one year.
Emily Burke of Morris Plains, who recently graduated from the University of Maryland, has been awarded a prestigious Boren Scholarship to continue her studies next year in Turkey. Boren Scholarships, awarded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) to support international study, can cover up to $20,000 of the student's expenses. Burke was one of 151 students nationally to receive the scholarship. Burke attended Morristown High School, graduating in 2007. At the University of Maryland, she earned a double degree in Government & Politics and History, and a Terrorism Studies minor. The Tri-County Scholarship Fund's 19th annual golf outing raised $140,000 for the organization, which sends children from economically challenged families to high-performing private and parochial schools in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties. During the event, held June 6 at the historic Morris County Golf Club, 20 foursomes played the challenging course, organizers said. Golfers had the chance to swing their ways to an Audi (donated by Audi of Bendardsville), a BMW (donated by Open Road BMW of Morristown) or a Ford (donated by Wayne Ford). Participants also had the opportunity to bid on an array of golf packages as well as a host of vacation destinations, including Ireland and the Nantucket. Soon-to-be med student will receive $4,000 from The 200 Club.
Two teen EMT's from the Morris Minute Men First Aid Squad have been selected for $4,000 scholarships from the 200 Club. The two volunteers are Grace Kunas, whom we recently profiled and Nikhil "Nikky" Shah. The scholarships are given to 25 Morris County high school students who volunteer as EMTs. Shah serves on an overnight shift every week for the Morris Minute Men. He has answered 76 emergency medical calls since joining in July of 2010 and also takes part in other Minute Men activities. He is a graduating senior at Morristown High School and will be studying medicine at University of Miami.
