Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. Mt. Tabor gym offers morning event for the special day
Anytime Fitness in Mt. Tabor is all set for Small Business Saturday, says owner Eric Skovronek. The gym, which offers its members 24/7 access to a clean and comfortable fitness facility, is three years old and very much a small business. "This is a small business owned and operated by local residents," he said. "Even though Anytime Fitness is an international franchise, each is owned and operated locally. As such, the owners, who grew up down the street, participate in local activities and support many other local organizations." American Express' 'Small Business Saturday' promotion is one way. But other, more local promotions exist, as well.
Small Business Saturday is important, and not just because it gives American Express card users a $25 credit for shopping locally. Held the Saturday after Black Friday, Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 as a way to encourage shoppers to not only take advantage of the doorbuster deals at big box stores the day after Thanksgiving, but to spread that love a little closer to home. Bavaro is a former tight end for the New York Giants, and a former resident of Chatham.
Mark Bavaro, a former New York Giant and Chatham resident, will sign autographs and take pictures with fans at Legends Gallery from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2. Advance tickets, including an item for Bavaro to autograph, is $50. An 8-x-10 in. copy of the cover of Sports Illustrated's Dec. 15, 1986 edition, which features Bavaro on the cover, is $55. Legends has also hosted several other Giants in past months, including Eli Manning in September, Jason Pierre-Paul in July and Victor Cruz in March. Bavaro last appeared in Chatham in November 2010. The trick to getting the sweet substance—which either consists primarily of sugar and water for a poured product, or add ingredients like gelatin for a rolled consistency—to stick properly to a product is, at least here, vodka. Governor's new gas plan and restrictions imposed by station owners results in slightly shorter waits in some places, same story in others.
At noon Saturday, Gov. Chris Christie's even-odd gas rationing mandate went into effect for 12 New Jersey counties, including Bergen, Essex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Warren. The result, in some cases, was modestly shorter gas lines than have been seen in the days since Sandy hit. Of course, other stations featured the same long lines and interminable waits that have dotted North Jersey in recent days.

In preparation of Hurricane Sandy's arrival later Monday, many area businesses didn't take chances and closed up well before things started getting windy and rainy Monday morning. I'd love to see a similar effort geared to "business to business" support. It's truly strange to run a business in town that generates 0% of its income from local businesses. We have plenty of folks from NYC/Brooklyn using our web design and hosting services (our servers are even local, Parsippany), but pitching to those local to us seems to provide the least bang for our buck.
