Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Morristown, Morris Township and Morris Plains. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. This year, some of the stores (…

Mt. Tabor gym offers morning event for the special day
Anytime Fitness in Mt. Tabor is all set for Small Business Saturday, says owner Eric Skovronek. The gym, which offers its members 24/7 access to a clean and comfortable fitness facility, is three years old and very much a small business. "This is a small business owned and operated by local residents," he said. "Even though Anytime Fitness is an international franchise, each is owned and operated locally. As such, the owners, who grew up down the street, participate in local activities and support many other local organizations." Skovronek said the enterprise run by himself and his wife Dodi is meant to be a small neighborhood fitness center that serves Parsippany, Denville and Morris Plains. He said that as the business has grown since …

American Express' 'Small Business Saturday' promotion is one way. But other, more local promotions exist, as well.
Small Business Saturday is important, and not just because it gives American Express card users a $25 credit for shopping locally. Held the Saturday after Black Friday, Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 as a way to encourage shoppers to not only take advantage of the doorbuster deals at big box stores the day after Thanksgiving, but to spread that love a little closer to home. But, while the nationwide program functions in conjunction with being an American Express cardholder, C'est Cheese store manager Patrice Anderson suggested it goes beyond that. "I think most people that come in and do see the signs for Small Business Saturday don't come in because they're using their American Express card," she said. "I think they are …

What exactly is fondant anyway?
The short, easy answer to the above question is: Edible Play-Doh. That, according to Tracey Silverman, owner of Sweet Lucy's Bakery, who showed Patch the inner-workings of just how one of those intricate design cakes go from sugar and flour to a work-of-art. The trick to getting the sweet substance—which either consists primarily of sugar and water for a poured product, or add ingredients like gelatin for a rolled consistency—to stick properly to a product is, at least here, vodka. What? "It dries faster than water," said Morristown resident Sara Francella, who has worked at Sweet Lucy's since it opened early last year. But, don't worry, this isn't drinking vodka, it's the kind that comes at the lowest possible price, in a large plastic …

Downtown never lost power, which has drawn many from outside our area.

Morristown's downtown has been open and ready for your business pretty much since the recovery phase of this week's storm began. Since much of the town's retail sector has opened, many have availed themselves of our services from where electricity remains a scarce commodity. Earlier this week we posted what was open and closed, and now we want to clean up that list and let our readers—from both inside Morristown and beyond—know what is open right now and ready to take your order and hard-earned dollars. This is not just about where to eat and drink, however. If you know that the Morristown and Morris Township Library has reopened, or whether a gas station is open and pumping gas, let us know that in the comments section as well. Also, let …

Governor's new gas plan and restrictions imposed by station owners results in slightly shorter waits in some places, same story in others.
At noon Saturday, Gov. Chris Christie's even-odd gas rationing mandate went into effect for 12 New Jersey counties, including Bergen, Essex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Warren. The result, in some cases, was modestly shorter gas lines than have been seen in the days since Sandy hit. Of course, other stations featured the same long lines and interminable waits that have dotted North Jersey in recent days.

Still, some decided it wasn't time to close up shop in anticipation of the storm just yet.
In preparation of Hurricane Sandy's arrival later Monday, many area businesses didn't take chances and closed up well before things started getting windy and rainy Monday morning. Which is what helped make the lit-up "open" sign outside Jersey Boy Bagels stand out that much more. "The news crews always come here, because we're the only ones ever open," said owner Aref Aboukwaik between customers. "We may close a little early, it really depends on the weather." C'est Cheese, just a few storefronts down, also announced they had opened sometime after 9 a.m. and would be open "at least until 2 p.m.," according to their Facebook page. A reader also noted The Jury Box and John's Deli, both on Washington Street, also had decided to open Monday …

I'd love to see a similar effort geared to "business to business" support. It's truly strange to run a business in town that generates 0% of its income from local businesses. We have plenty of folks from NYC/Brooklyn using our web design and hosting services (our servers are even local, Parsippany), but pitching to those local to us seems to provide the least bang for our buck. IT services in …   more ›
