MPAC to Host First-Ever In-House Production

Auditions for 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' begin Feb. 7 for thespians aged seven-through-21.

To all our thespians between seven and 21 with dreams of performing in front of a lot of people ... how does 1,400 thrill you? The Mayo Performing Arts Center is holding open auditions in February for its first-ever in-house production, a four-show run of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Auditions begin Feb. 7. The show will run from May 31 through June 2. One of Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's best-recognized productions, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is based on the "coat of many colors" story of Joseph from the Bible's Book of Genesis. It was the first Lloyd Webber and Rice musical to be performed publicly, in 1968. Cathy Roy, education director for MPAC's Mayo Performing Arts School, said the …

Musical Comedy 'Nunsense' Hits Morris Stage

Bickford Theatre livens up the summer with first-rate cast in musical.

What’s all this nonsense about the Bickford Theatre staging an unprecedented summer musical? The professional resident theater company at the Morris Museum in Morris Township is normally dark in the summer aside from children’s activities and the occasional one-nighter. Divine providence, though, intercedes this year as Artistic Director Eric Hafen has whipped up a production of the reliably entertaining musical comedy “Nunsense.” Sure, this off-Broadway phenomenon has been done—done to death some would say. The program claims 5,000 productions worldwide in 21 languages since 1985. Then there are the six sequels and three spinoffs in what has become a lucrative show-business brand for playwright Dan Goggin (who launched the funny nuns …

Shakespeare Theatre Opens 50th Season

“Henry IV, Part One,” opening Wednesday, will stand on grand traditional staging.

The history of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey traces back to the Kennedy administration and the mythical “Camelot” era of the United States. Five decades later, the longest-running Shakespeare theater on America’s East Coast—and one recognized internationally for its consistency of excellence—will begin its 50th anniversary season in royal fashion. Artistic Director Bonnie J. Monte says the season-opener, “Henry IV, Part One,” which opens Wednesday, will be presented in grand traditional style. A slight departure, perhaps, from the reverent-yet-innovative productions the company is known for, but Monte said that this special milestone deserved a production that encompasses the qualities that have drawn people to Shakespeare for 400 …

Fans of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. won't want to miss " The Rat Pack: Together Again!" at the Bickford Theatre. Tony Sans, Johhny Petillo and Geno Monroe promise an evening that will bring audiences back to a classic chapter in show business history. The Mayo Performing Arts Center will offer some nostalgia of a more recent vintage when Boyz II Men performs there on June 1. Meanwhile, Stephen Sondheim's "Assassins" continues at Barn …

Comedy, Music & Lots of Sondheim on Stage

Area theater lovers can see two shows by the legendary composer in the coming weeks

The works of Stephen Sondheim are among the most challenging in theater, but the great composer obviously isn't intimidating area theater groups. Dover Little Theater is currently staging "Company," Sondheim's groundbreaking 1970 classic about a single man in three relationships. The show is known as one of the first that deals with realistic adult themes, and features such songs as "Being Alive." Meanwhile, The Barn Theatre will present "Assassins," with a run opening May 18. The 1990 musical is about the men and women who either assassinated, or tried to assassinate, presidents of the United States. And even if you don't like Sondheim, there's bound to be something for everyone on a stage near you, from "Cabaret," to "Southern Comforts" …
