Former Principal Says New Role is 'Important Work'

Director of Human Resources and Community Engagement to serve as contact person between school administration, faculty, students and parents, according to superintendent.

The idea of creating a director of Human Resources and Community Engagement for the Morris School District was already in the hopper even before the controversial decision to reassign former Morristown High School Principal Linda Murphy, a year before she already was set to retire, district officials said Wednesday. "We've been talking about this position for months," Superintendent Thomas Ficarra said, as Murphy sat by his side. "There is an achievement gap, and one of the ways we felt we could help close that achievement gap was to increase parental involvement. Linda started that [at Morristown High School]. ... There also was a gap in our connection as an institution." To close the gap, between administration, faculty, students and …

Interim Morristown High Principal: How Can I Help?

Ethel Minchello previously served as Frelinghuysen Middle School's principal from 2003-2011.

It wasn't much of a retirement for Ethel Minchello. Only six months had passed following her tenure as principal of Frelinghuysen Middle School when she began an interim project with the Mount Arlington School. Then, just last month, Morris School District Superintendent Thomas Ficarra gave her a call and asked if she would be available as an interim principal at Morristown High School. But, that's OK for the 61-year-old Kinnelon resident, who has been in education for 40 years. "I knew I wasn't ready to give up education," she said. That call from the superintendent came only days before the Board of Education meeting in June that saw hundreds turn out in support of Linda Murphy, who was set to be reassigned as principal of the Lafayette …

Morris Twp parent - try not to focus on the majority of the race in the audience. Without sounding "disloyal" the black community has survived by galvanizing in all areas of adversity. Whether it be the march on Selma, Washington or the right to vote. Protecting her is what they thought was the right thing to do. We do not even know if everyone had all the facts before showing up to this meeting …   more ›

Was Murphy's Reassignment Handled Right?

No one knows, and those who do know aren't saying, why the Morristown High School principal has been moved after seven years.

It was a long meeting. Filled with emotion, some of it anger, a lot of it sadness, from several hundred people. Amidst the waiting throngs, and even after Linda Murphy had returned from an hours-long closed session between herself, her attorneys and the Morris School District, many still wanted to know one thing: why? Why was Murphy supposed to be reassigned as principal of the Lafayette Learning Center pre-school after serving at Morristown High School's principal for seven years? Why did they decide on giving her the title of "Director of Human Resources and Community Engagement" instead, one year before she said she plans to retire? Did the school district handle the situation as best it could? Could they have done better or would …
