5 Things About the Model Train Club

The Morris Plains Model Railroad Club meets at 751 Speedwell Avenue in the old Freight Station on Friday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The Morris Plains Model Railroad Club is a group of about 15 model train fans who like to run their trains in a historic building, the original 1915 Freight Station serving the Greystone Park State Psychiatric Hospital.

1) The station was sold by the Erie Lackawanna to Morris Plains.

It was used as the Police Department and by a local youth group.

2) In 1993, founder, Floyd LaBarre, Jr., and some friends convinced the town fathers it would be an excellent site for a Model Railroad Club.

The club got a portion of the and in 2000 took over the entire building.

3) Initially, the club had 3 layouts, an N-scale table, a HO0scale table and a table with both Lionel and Standard gauge track.

Now it has HO and Lionel layouts.

4) The layouts cover the late 1930s to mid-1960s.

But the members’ interests influence the layouts and in May 2001 they nailed down the final track on the anniversary of the nailing of the Golded Spike linking the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads.

5) It is part of the Morris Plains Rec Commission.
